This car has spent its entire life in California. The car did not meet its reverse price and went unsold but the four years of labor involved in transforming this Mad Men two-seater into a boulevard king is worth mentioning. The same engine still powers this custom 1963 Ford Thunderbird showcased on Stratas Auctions last month. The standard engine for the third-gen Thunderbird was the 6.4-liter 390 V8 matched to a three-speed Cruise-O Matic transmission, good for 300 horsepower in the early 1960s. One of the easiest ways to spot a ’63 T-bird is by its set of chrome hash marks on the car’s profile unique to that model year. These are known amongst car-enthusiasts as the “Bullet Birds” due to their space-race era sleek design.

The third generation lasted from 1961 to 1963. In 1961, Ford debuted the third generation of the Thunderbird with an all-new design. It started as a direct competitor to the Chevrolet Corvette but quickly evolved into a softer, bigger, personal luxury sports car by the late 1950s. Why? Because the Thunderbird nameplate has been around since 1955, with 11 generations under its family name. People who have no particular interest in cars can remember hearing or know that a Ford Thunderbird is a kind of sports car. It’s time to place your bid and keep your eye on this car.You have to be very young to have never heard of the Ford Thunderbird. Keep in mind this 1963 Ford Thunderbird definitely won’t be sticking around since it’s on the virtual auction block right now. It has been shown off at all kinds of shows and events in the US and was displayed for the Mooneyes Hot Rod Custom show in Japan. The work consumed 4 years and the result, as you can see, is nothing short of spectacular. Professionally built by Starlite Road and Kustom of Harbor City, California, the shop has a sparkling reputation for mild custom builds. Despite much about this Thunderbird being transformed, the factory 390ci V8 and frame were left unchanged. Since the system has been installed at each wheel and is adjustable, the configurations for ride heights is never ending. That low stance is made possible with an Accuair air ride suspension, which also keeps the ride nice and smooth. It includes dark green seats and carpet, plus Kiwi Green with metal flakes for a strong tie to the exterior. photo credit: Stratas AuctionsĪ custom interior was designed and installed by Chuy’s Auto Interior in Carson, California. Malex Pinstriping added the intricate lines to really make this car pop. Gracing that long body is a Kiwi Green with dark green Freeway Scallops plus plenty of metal flake added to the mix literally makes this Ford sparkle in the sunlight. According to the owner, this car was purchased from the previous person in pristine stock condition, which included nice factory features like air conditioning plus power windows and power seats. In fact, it’s a huge plus since that means it hasn’t been driven on salted roads and endured harsh winters. The fact this is a California car shouldn’t be a shock. Now this car is being auctioned, so this could be your chance at ownership. That’s what makes this Thunderbird so refreshing, because the owner has added just the right amount of flair to accentuate the natural beauty Ford imbued it with, making it a true work of art on wheels. When it comes to custom, low-slung American classics like this 1963 Ford Thunderbird, some people take the approach of cramming as much artistic flair as possible onto every square inch of the car. This rolling canvas is restrained beauty in motion.
